Those ready and able to ‘flash the cash’ will discover all the top international designer names in the boutiques lining the streets of upscale Puerto Banus; window shopping can be fun here too and there are affordable outlets in among the coveted label shops. Spanish shoe designer Manolo Blahnik is known worldwide for the luxury footwear to which he gives his name.
Many famous brands can be found under one roof in the El Corte Inglés stores; the biggest department store group in Europe with shops located here in Malaga, Fuengirola, Marbella and Puerto Banus. ‘El Corte Inglés’, which is Spain’s only remaining department store chain, sprang from an initial purchase of a 19th century tailor’s shop in the country’s capital Madrid in 1935, and its name translates as ‘The English Cut’. Clothes, accessories, household, electrical goods… you’ll find it all here as well as large Hipercor supermarkets, and at selected stores the Gourmet Club for epicurean food and drink.
There are many other attractive places to shop on this coast, among them the pedestrianised Calle Larios and Port Muelle Uno in Malaga city, with its exquisite views of the Alcazaba: the La Cañada shopping mall in Marbella; Fuengirola’s many independent and often quirky boutiques and the shopping streets of little towns such as La Cala, Mijas and Benalmadena Pueblo.
As you’d expect, seafront shops and kiosks are awash with traditional souvenir goods, and there are a number of regular markets offering fresh produce, new goods, antiques and collectibles, as well as car boot sales.
