The popular resort town of Fuengirola is just 5 minutes away from Club La Costa World and is easily reached by car, taxi or even on foot. With its sandy beaches that stretch for 7 kilometres from the Sohail Castle to Torreblanca and beyond, Fuengirola is alive with every type of holiday water sports activity imaginable, and equipment hire and tuition are both readily available.
A family day at the beach offers everyone the chance for some holiday fun in the sun, with a typical treat being a banana boat ride – try to stay on board if you can! – or a wave-skimming tube ride from one of several operators that work direct from the sands. There are also alternative thrill rides featuring knee-boarding or wakeboarding and some boats will have waterskiing equipment for experienced skiers, although beginners can have a lesson.
Although they tend to be a little more expensive, jet skis for one or two people are available for a 15-minute hire, and are always guaranteed to provide great fun with a real sense of open-water adventure.
While windsurfing has retained its popularity for many years, and still attracts enthusiasts all along the southern Spanish coast, the latest extreme water sports craze to hit the Costa del Sol is kite-surfing – a combination of wind surfing and water skiing – where you skim over the waves on a small surfboard/ski which is pulled along by a kite. Lessons are required for beginners to ‘get the knack’, but once the basic skills are acquired, it’s huge fun and experts can reach incredible speeds before flipping their boards high into the air to perform complicated leaps and somersaults.
Younger family members will always enjoy a pedalo ride – which is great for topping up your holiday tan – and many come with a built-in water slide, while sea kayaks are an equally tranquil way of enjoying the warm Mediterranean waters, even if they are a little harder on the arms!
Away from the beaches, Fuengirola Marina is the focal point for yet more waterborne fun. New for summer 2014 is the awesomely quick, 360º Jet Boat – a huge adrenaline rush as it travels at up to 55mph across the water – and there are also offices where you can arrange a soaring ‘smiley face’ parasailing ride or a half-day or full-day sea-fishing trip, with bait and tackle included. Regular dolphin safaris depart every day from the port and, for that truly memorable holiday experience afloat, why not go for a private yacht charter, for a romantic full day or evening sailing?
Scuba divers can enjoy the many beach and sea cliff dive sites along the Costa del Sol and there are several clubs – including one in Fuengirola Marina – that advertise day trips for both experienced divers and beginners seeking their first underwater experience.
All of the water sports companies are strictly regulated by the Spanish authorities; boat skippers and crew members have to be licensed and all equipment must comply with Spanish safety regulations. Life jackets, buoyancy aids and helmets will be issued as part of the hire charge, where applicable and depending on which activity you choose, so you can be sure of a safe and enjoyable water sports experience on your Club La Costa World holiday.
